HEALTH OCCUPATIONS

 

Community Health Advocacy

Offered through Hocking College & Tri-County Adult Career Center in conjunction with the Community Health Worker Advisory Council. 

 

Course will be taught once a year through Hocking College during their winter term (January – March).  Classes will run once a week for two hours for 10 weeks.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This entry level Community Health Course gives students the knowledge of resources in their community and gives them skills and empowerment to help clients/patients/community members make behavioral changes in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention.  

 

Classroom lecture/discussion focuses on the role of a community health advocate, resources in the community, knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention, HIPPA regulations, medical law and ethics, communication techniques, and hands-on training experience in the pathway models to solve healthcare problems.  Students explore their community resources outside the classroom. 

 

This course is designed for volunteers from the community and persons working directly with families and individuals in a community setting.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Learn ways to help people make behavioral changes
  • Identify resources in the community
  • Increase knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention
  • Increase self-awareness
  • Improve listening and communication techniques
  • Learn ways to help people in crisis
  • Learn ways to help people deal with loss across the lifespan
  • Understand HIPAA & medical legal and ethical issues
  • Learn how to use Pathways Models toward solving access to healthcare in the community.
